Good Year for Film, Television and
New Media
PRESS REVIEW: According to the government
of Nova, the local film industry
had its best year on record with
$150 million in production activity
in 2008-09. Film Nova Scotia announced
that the record-breaking figure
is directly attributed to the Nova
Scotia government's film tax credit
that supports local productions
and helps attract more foreign film
productions.
Nova
Scotia's film industry had a banner
year last year, after a disappointing
2007-08.
Ann
MacKenzie, president and CEO of
Film Nova Scotia, said local productions
doubled in value to $150 million
in 2008-09, the industry's best
year ever.
MacKenzie
said the current shooting year,
which began April 1, is already
off to a better start than last
year's record figures.
Television
and Film Production Funding Programs
in Nova Scotia
Film
Nova Scotia administers several
loan and investment programs to
eligible Nova Scotia companies and
their co-production partners in
an effort to support film and television
production in Nova Scotia. The last
annual funding deadline for 2009
is Friday, August 28.
Videoconferencing
Eyes Growth Spurt
Companies turn to tech to
save on travel expenses
As
seen in USA Today:
Excerpt
Ben
Weinberger, chief information officer
of a law firm, typically travels
about 25 times a year visiting colleagues
around the country to make sure
their information technology systems
are working properly. His employer,
Lathrop & Gage, has 11 offices
and 300 attorneys. But Weinberger
estimates he will travel only once
this year to each office, relying
instead on videoconferencing from
the main office in Kansas City.
The
firm has six dedicated videoconference
rooms there, with high-definition
cameras, 47-inch or larger monitors,
and software provided by California-based
Polycom, a large videoconferencing
equipment supplier.
"You
don't have a meal with your colleagues
videoconferencing," Weinberger
says. "But I can save tens
of thousands of dollars. If I go
to the New York office only once,
instead of going three times a year,
I save the firm $3,000 (on airfare
and hotels), and that's just me."
In
a development that has airlines
and hotels spooked, more companies
are starting to agree with Weinberger's
assessment. In 2008, the global
videoconferencing market grew 24%
to $2.4 billion, according to Roopam
Jain, a technology analyst at Frost
& Sullivan. The firm forecasts
the market will more than double,
to reach $5.7 billion by 2013.
To
financially support our team, CEV
raffled off a Sony Bravia 40"
HD TV worth $1,300. All proceeds
have been donated to the Montreal
Jewish General Hospital to fund
cancer research and care.
The
draw was held on July 13, one day
after the event and the lucky winner
is Brenda Abell, from the Montreal
region.
Thanks
for helping us with this important
cause!!

Two
Montreal-based Production Houses
Honored at Grammies 2009
CEV
would like to congratulate FogoLabs
& StroboSonic for winning a
well-deserved Grammy, for their
remarkable Zappa Plays Zappa.
Their
enormous talent has allowed them
to finish ahead of giants like David
Gilmour (from Pink Floyd), Rush
and Nine Inch Nails, in spite of
a much smaller operating budget.
The
independent music label StroboSonic,
from Montreal, initiated the project.
FogoLabs, another Montreal-based
company, provided all the production
technical services.
CEV
is proud to have FogoLabs amongst
its clients and hopes to continue
to collaborate with its talented
team and partners.
